BSC students learning about sustainability
at Kan Yama Kan Village
This January, grade 4, 5, and 6 students from the British School in Cairo (BSC) paid a visit to Kan Yama Kan Village for their second year in a row. They spent three days packed with hands-on learning activities about tree planting, farm animal behavior and care, global warming and climate change, poverty and the distribution of wealth, measuring ecological impacts, and teamwork and character development. By the end of the camp, the kids left not only with an enthusiasm for protecting the environment, but a great plan for starting their own Green Team at school!
Showing off the Green Team uniform
Since taking their enthusiasm back with them to the classroom, the students have made the BSC Green Team into the school's first after-school club! They have begun fundraising for the team by hosting bake sales, and produced their own Green Team T-shirts. They just bought two big attractive ceramic tubs and will soon begin to collect paper and plastic for recycling in order to launch their own recycling plant at BSC. Way to go Green Team!
Around the campfire one night during their stay with us, BSC students wrote a rap about the environment and performed it for their fellow classmates. After returning to school, the whole team performed their "Enviro-Rap" at the BSC Fun Day, and again for a TV documentary recently produced about the school! Next, the kids will be entering their rap in the WESC environmental song competition for the Azhar Park June 5 Festival, organised in cooperation with the British Council. Good luck enviro-rappers!
Learning about animal behavior
and riding horses and donkeys
The British School in Cairo has provided an outstanding example of what can happen when a group of students, with the support and guidance of a few committed teachers, put their heads together to turn their passion for the environment into real action. We at MCSDP are proud to have been the spark to their fire and encourage the Green Team to continue shining brightly for BSC and other schools throughout Egypt!
